Hong Kong History
- Became part of the People's Republic of Chian on 7/1/1998
- Was part of the United Kingdom before then for 156 years
- Hong-Kong negotiated special privileges as part of its re-integration into China
- English would continue to be the official language
- A border would be maintained with mainland China
- Mainland Chinese citizens would need a visa to visit
- Hong Kong would retain a common law system (based on UK law)
- Hong Kong would continue using the Hong Kong Dollar
- Over time some of these privileges have been revoked
- Hong Kong is less independent now (2018) than it was previously
