Started out as a railway porter and waiter, George Soros is known as the man who broke the Bank of England. He is a legendary hedge fund tycoon who managed client money in New York from 1969 to 2011. In 1992, he shorted the British pound and reportedly made a profit of $1 billion, breaking the Bank of England in the process. He established the Open Society Foundations, a philanthropic organization which focuses in part on Central and Eastern Europe, and has made at least $14 billion in grants. Soros transferred $18 billion from his family office to his Open Society Foundations by 2018. His fund's assets are worth an estimated $8.3 billion.
